Welcome to a New Day, a New Year, and a New Life!
Every year most people will make some sort of resolution to improve their life, i.e., to stop smoking, exercise, spend less time at work, go to the gym, read for 30 minutes a day, etc. However, about the 2nd week of January, for many, the resolutions have fallen by the wayside and discouragement sets in due to the inability to stick to the improvement. I'm here to tell you it doesn't have to be that way.
One of the reasons people are not as successful as they would like is because they try to make too many changes at once! Instead of making 10 resolutions that are difficult to keep, why not do one at a time? If you know there are 10 or 12 things you would like to see happen in your life, go ahead and make a list of them - but don't try to accomplish them all at once. Choose 1 item and focus on that for one month. Anytime you do something for 30 days straight, it becomes a habit. At the end of the month, it will have become an intricate part of your new healthier life. Then choose another item to focus on for the next month - again doing it for 30 days. At the end of the month, you will have another new, good habit! That will be 2 resolutions you have now implemented. Continue to do so each month and at the end of a year you will have met your resolution goals!
Another reason resolutions fall apart is a lack of support. When you are making lifestyle changes if those around you are not supportive, you will find it extremely challenging to stick with them. The solution: surround yourself with a team of friends that will cheer you on! They may be friends who want to make the change with you, facebook friends who can encourage your daily progress, family members who do it with you, an "official" support group meeting that helps you when you feel alone, or it may just be someone you barely know but is an encourager, or it could be all of the above and more. Regardless of who it is or why you choose them ~ utilize a support system! Your success will be all the sweeter for being able to share it with those who care.
My challenge to you this month is to look around and see not only areas in your life that you would like to improve but also where you can provide support and encouragement for someone else. It may be as simple as a facebook note, asking how they are doing with their changes (and sharing yours at the same time) or seeking them out. At the same time, look for a supporting cast for you as you make healthier lifestyle changes. If you find there are "toxic" people in your life - you know the ones, they "drain the life" right out of you, are constantly critical of everything you do or accomplish, etc. - Well you may not be able to remove them completely from your life (hey, they may be family) but you can choose how much time you spend with them and how much you feed into their negativity! Remember that your emotional/mental health plays a huge role in your physical health and visa versa!
Natural Health Lifestyle Meeting: Tuesday January 12 at 6:30 p.m. Our support group meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of each month. At each meeting we have a health topic that we discuss, there is time for questions (and answers), there is an opportunity to talk with others who are implementing healthy lifestyle choices, and we have a healthy dish of some kind for you to taste (along with a few recipes to take home).
Recipe of the Month
Sweet & Sour Vegetables and Sauce: This is a delicious recipe that my good friend Julie Thomison (a local Raw Food Chef) shared with me a long time ago and I just love. Hope you enjoy!
Combine all vegetables in a bowl and toss to mix. Pour sweet & sour sauce over vegetables. For a "warm" dish, place in a dehydrator for a couple of hours to soften vegetables. This could also be "stir-fried" but wouldn't be as healthy because it would be cooked!
|1 head cauliflower, cut into florets
2 bunches broccoli florets
3 large carrots peeled & diced
1 large red bell pepper, cut into 1 inch strips
1 red onion thinly sliced into rings
|1 cup shitake mushrooms, thinly sliced
1 cup water chestnuts, sliced
1 cup baby corn
3/4 cup mung bean sprouts
1 recipe sweet & sour sauce
Sweet & Sour Sauce:
Crush garlic in garlic press and chop ginger (so it doesn't jam the blades) and put all into the food processor (or small blender) and blend until pureed. The seeds will float up with the oils when left standing - just stir when using.
|3/4 cup Nama Shoyu
3/4 cup agave
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1 inch gingerroot
|2 Tbsp Sesame seeds
1 tsp sesame oil
2 tsp red pepper flakes
Health Tid-bit: Consume Real Foods!
When you eat a meal, is it real food? Does it grow in the ground or on a tree? Is it something that contains a seed that if planted would grow? Is it something that you could eat without any (or very little) preparation? Does it come in a package or box or is it on a counter that you can recognize that it is a food? Does it have an ingredient list? Is it grown locally or is it transported thousands of miles to your local grocery? These are all questions to ask when you are deciding what's for dinner!
The more you eat foods in its natural, whole form the better your body is able to utilize the nutrients it contains. I have people ask me all the time: What can I eat? This is so hard to prepare - isn't there a simpler way? I have to say, what is more simple than peeling an orange, or a banana, or washing off some strawberries for a quick snack. How much easier can it be than to take a few minutes to chop some vegetables, throw on a quick sauce and have a "sweet & sour" dish? (see recipe above). How difficult is it to keep some fresh almonds on hand for a quick replenishment after a workout? Even when making a more "involved" raw food dish (or vegan dish for that matter), it truly doesn't take any more time than preparing a dish from the Standard American Diet! The difference is that you may choose to follow a recipe whereas with a SAD dish you have made you already know how it goes together.
Once you begin consuming more of the whole, real foods the body begins craving them instead of the junk/processed foods that you have been eating. Bonus: you get to feel better and look better and you are setting a great example for those around you!
