April 2010
Happy Spring!

It has been a beautiful spring so far, with the typical rain and the not-so-typical warm weather! Hopefully, you've been able to get outside to enjoy it. Whether beginning your outdoor exercise program, getting ready to plant the garden, or just taking the time for a walk through the park, the sunshine & fresh air will do much to improve your health and attitude!

This month I would like to share a terrific article written by a fellow Colon Hydrotherapist, Crystel Lyons. Her article about natural health care's best kept secret is a must read!

Colon Hydrotherapy: Natural Health Care's Best Kept Secret

To most people, the subject of colonics is off limits. It seems the lowly colon is the "Rodney Dangerfield" of the body. I love to see the response when people ask me what I do... their noses wrinkle up and faces pale, others will either roll their eyes or run. The brave ones ask me, "How can you do it?"! My answer is simple. "I know how valuable this therapy has been to my health and I want to offer others the same opportunity."

Before you turn that page, let's logic this out. We wash our hands and faces, we bathe/shower our outer bodies, we brush our teeth, even scrape our tongues. How can the bathing of the colon be somehow taboo? Netti pots have been used for thousands of years to irrigate the sinuses. Allow me to suggest this corollary: Colon hydrotherapy is to the large intestine as a netti pot is to the sinus tract. Seriously, why are the same people, who willingly consent to a camera being inserted up their rectum, squeamish about a little water?!/!

Natural Health Lifestyle Meeting: Tuesday April 13, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. Our support group meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of each month. At each meeting we have a health topic that we discuss, there is time for questions (and answers), there is an opportunity to talk with others who are implementing healthy lifestyle choices, and we have a healthy dish of some kind for you to taste (along with a few recipes to take home).

Kokomo Farmer's Market is now open on Saturday mornings from 8-12 in downtown Kokomo. Be sure to support your local farmers! The market is seasonal, so although there may not be as much fresh produce yet, there are plenty of other items for you to check out!

Recipe of the Month: Black Bean & Corn Salad (from May We All Be Fed)

2 cans black beans, rinsed & drained
1/3 cup lime juice, freshly squeezed
1/2 cup olive oil
1 clove garlic, minced
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
1 1/2 cups corn kernels
1 small red bell pepper chopped
2 med. tomatoes, chopped
6 green onions, chopped
1 hot chili pepper, seeded & minced
1 avocado, peeled & chopped
1/2 cup cilantro, coarsely chopped

Rinse & drain beans. Put lime juice, olive oil, and cayenne in a small jar, cover with lid and shake until ingredients are well mixed.

In a salad bowl, combine beans, corn, avocado, bell pepper, tomatoes, green onion, chili pepper, & cilantro. Shake the lime dressing & pour over the salad. Stir until well coated. Refrigerate & adjust seasonings before serving if needed. *If you are making this the night before, leave out the avocado & add it in just before serving.

Better Than Tuna (from Recipes for Life from God's Garden)

2 cups carrots, finely shredded
1 medium red bell pepper, finely chopped
2 celery stalks, finely chopped
1/2 sweet red onion, finely chopped
1/2 cup fresh parsley, minced
1/2 tsp kelp
1/2 tsp Celtic sea salt
4 Tbsp Vegenaise (or a raw mayo substitute)

Place veggies in a bowl and combine with dressings & seasonings. Mix well and allow flavors to mingle for several hours. May be served on a bed of dark green lettuce, in a sandwich, pita, stuffed in a whole tomatoes or a cucumber boat!

Health Tid-bit: The Weakest Link

When working on our health we need to remember that all aspects of health are interconnected. The amount of water you drink, how much exercise you get, your sleep habits, how much time you spend in the sun, your attitude - all of these contribute to your total overall health. It also has to do with all areas of your life - your financial health, spiritual health, relationship health, as well as your physical health. When examining each aspect it must be accepted that your health is only as good as your weakest link! That is the area that is holding you back. You make peace with it, but it is holding you back. Make a list of everything you would like to change about your health if you could. Your weakest lifestyle link is the holdup. If you focus on your weakest link that is where you would see the most & quickest progress. But it is easy to ignore that area because you are challenged there! But then we get worse and the cycle continues. Remember that life is an endless list of lessons and one that needs to be learned is what is your weakest link. Address it and watch your health take off to new heights!
